Defending
champions seldom have anything to prove - they are after
all champions, but many tennis watches figured Patty
Schnyder would have difficulty defending her Swisscom
Challenge title when she faced Amélie Mauresmo for a
place in the quarter-finals. Yet Schnyder pulled out the
type of form that saw her become the champion here 12
months ago to dismiss the third seeded Frenchwoman 6-2 6-2
in a highly impressive 61 minutes.
"I played very well," said Schnyder afterwards.
"I let my arms play, I didn't think too much, and it
went well." Mauresmo admitted she just "played a
bad match", adding "There's not much more to say
about it." Clearly Schnyder is not feeling any
pressure as defending champion, in fact almost the
opposite. "Now people here in Switzerland have seen
what I can do, I'm feeling freer this year," said the
24-year-old from Basel.
In the quarter-finals, Schnyder will fancy her chances
against Jelena Dokic, the Serb who has seen a revival in
her form in the past two weeks but is still short of
confidence at the end of a frustrating year. The winner is
likely to face the world No 1 Kim Clijsters, assuming she
beats Tina Pisnik in her quarter-final. |
