Jelena Dokic wasn't the opponent but Patty Schnyder still
had a worthy opponent in Martina Sucha in the Pilot Pen
second round nightcap Wednesday.
Schnyder, unseeded in the Pilot Pen and ranked 24th in the
world, rallied to beat the little known Sucha 2-6, 6-3,
6-3 in a match that ended 45 minutes before midnight and
with few of the 7,576 fans still in the Connecticut Tennis
Center.
Schnyder advances to play in the quarterfinals today
against seventh-seeded Daniela Hantuchova. Sucha won the
first set but Schnyder's experience was key in the second
and third sets.
"She played well in the first set and deserved to win,"
Schnyder said. "But I just kept fighting and came back. I
really think I can win (against Hantuchova today)."
Sucha entered the Pilot Pen field at the last minute as a
'lucky loser' when third-seeded Jelena Dokic withdrew
because of a hamstring injury. The 'lucky loser' means
that the highest-seeded player in the qualifying draw that
lost in the finals of the qualifying advances into the
main draw if a player withdraws.
Sucha, ranked 42nd in the world, lost in a qualifying
final match Sunday to Jelena Kostanic.
