Oddly enough,
frustration had as much to do with Patty Schnyder's wildly
uneven 7-6, 6-0 victory over Roberta Vinci as excellence
did during the opening round of Monday's 2004 US Open.
"I thought I played solid
from the opening serve," said Schnyder (No. 15). "On the other hand, I
thought she played so well in the first set that when she didn't win,
she got really down and was almost a different player by the second
match. Just look at all the mistakes she made from the first set to the
second."
Indeed,
when it comes to the 21-year-old Italian, the numbers from both sets
tell the tale of a different player. On the night, Vinci finished with
ten unforced errors, more than three times the number recorded by
Schnyder, with most of them coming after the first match. And though she
outserved Schnyder, seven aces to two, most of that damage again was
done in the opening game, dropping her overall first service winners to
just 50 percent by night's end.
Schnyder, a
1998 US Open quarterfinalist, moves on to the second round, where she
will face the Czech Republic's Iveta Benesova, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 winner
over American Bethanie Mattek. |
