Top seeds power into last eight

Patty Schnyder continued her impressive opening to the tournament breaking her opponent once in the opener to take the first set before breezing through the second for a 6-4 6-1 win.

The second seed said she found the power of her opponent hard to contend with especially in the first set.

"I think in the first set I struggled a bit, I served pretty well but once the rally was on because she was a lefty I couldn’t really play my game," she said.

"She was always trying to play three quarters of the court with her forehand so I had to be careful with that. She can become a really good player. She has good strokes.

"The second set today I was really happy with my game it came quickly all together so I’m really happy and I hope that it’s going to last for a few more weeks and get everything going for Melbourne."

Schnyder, who is preparing herself for another big Australian Open campaign following last year’s semifinal performance, said she was feeling good for this early time of the year.

"I feel really good on the court. Physically I feel really healthy and I have been healthy for almost half a year now so I’m happy about that.

"Obviously the Australian Open is the first title of the year and I love being in Australia, love the conditions, sometimes it’s really tough to play with the weather or the wind but I like it. It’s a challenge for me to go in further than last year."
