Charleston 2002 - after loss to Iva Majoli
i

Patty Schnyder lost to Iva Majoli 6-7 4-6

Q. Patty, it didn't seem that either Iva or you played to the same level that you did previously in the week. Would you say that was probably true?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. I mean I couldn't expect it from me to play like a match like a day before or two days ago. So I just tried to do my best, and I was out there fighting every point and trying to get some good shots, and I think Iva played very well.

I'm not, I mean against me she cannot like hit a lot of winners that she did in the other rounds before, so it's very difficult, and I think she played very smart and she kept fighting. And I think I should have won the first set, but yeah, I think my energy was not just really there when it was supposed to be there.

And then the second set Iva, she gave me one break point and that was it. And she saved me an ace, so what can I do? I mean she played schnyder great. And yeah, like I said, of course, I'm a little disappointed. I thought I could win the whole thing, but I live so many great moments during the week and it's been the best week of my life.

Q. How emotionally draining were the previous upsets coming in? Did it just weigh on you so much coming into the final?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. I mean the finals were really all right in the final, but it wasn't like the two previous days, and I just ?? yeah, I live those moments with the crowd, and those are like impressions that you really have to realize and then you have to enjoy them. And I did so the other days, and I'm going to do this next week also.

Q. How hot was it out there? The court thermometer said 114 degrees. Did it feel like that?
PATTY SCHNYDER: No. I mean there was always a little breeze, and I mean I wasn't tired. I think Iva was more tired than I was, and I think the third set would have went to my favor, but I mean, yeah, she won the two first ones, so there was not a third set, but I felt good. I mean I'm not tired in my legs. I think like the energy was not really there mentally in the big points in the first set, and that was the difference.

Q. How big a turning point was that first set tiebreaker?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. I think I mean also before I lost the service game that I have three easy shots. I mean I just missed them. Yeah, today I missed them and the whole week I didn't. So that's sports. That's the way it is.

Q. She kind of ran up a little bit of a lead in the tiebreak and you were able to come back and push her almost to draw even. Just what was the difference in the two sides?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. She got a lead. She was playing great winners, hitting lines, and then she missed two, so yeah. I mean I can't say they weren't in the net. I mean I tried every point. I tried hard and I fight through it, and yeah, but she won it at the end.

Q. Your serve didn't seem to be really there for you as much as it had been the past couple days, and I think 8 of the 11 games actually you had breaks.
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. That's true. I don't know why. It must be ?? yeah, that's sport, I think, and I had so many good serves and my concentration was so good the last days and today it wasn't, so what can I do? I tried to improve it in the second set or every game, and just, yeah, it didn't work out
